Question by riplikash: Why is Womens Fashion the way it is?
So I got married last year, so now I get to shop with my wife, which I enjoy. It is such a pain for her to find anything decent to wear, especially the essentials. I am increasingly confounded at the womens fashion industry. Why is it the way it is? It seems like women have to go through so much more pain to look good then men do.
I’m a well dressed man. I know my body type and what makes me look good, and I can shop for that. In the men’s clothing sections 80% are essentials and they come in every size and shape. 20% are trendier more transitory clothing.
I get what I pay for. 150$ shoes last 3-5 years of consistent wear, 800$ Italian or British suits can last up to a decade if properly taken care of. Expensive items are made of high quality materials that last a long time, and improve with age. Sizes are descriptive: 17inch neck, 30 inch length, 34 inch waist. Tailoring is always available to fit clothing properly to my broad shouldered thin waisted frame for a nominal fee.
I shop with my wife, as I said. What do we see in the womens section? Almost the opposite. 80% of space is taken up by transitory fashion she needs 20% of the time. Good luck finding a decent black skirt if it isn’t fall. The materials are mostly junk. It is like they are designed to fall apart after a year of use.
The sizing is pointless and arbitrary. Petite, regular, plus? Size 0, 1, 2? What does that mean? And every company seems to treat it differently. It doesn’t correspond to any meaningful measurement, so she is stuck trying on 30 different things to see which designer happened to make a garment that fits her. And tailoring is almost non-existent.
And I start looking around and realizing most women seem to have given up, probably because it is so darn difficult to find a simple pair of jeans that fits your hips, butt, thighs, and at the correct length with a sizing chart as meaningless as “size 2 petite”.
Any ideas how this happened? Or am I misunderstanding something? I want to be more useful to my wife, but it is such a pain trying to find anything worth trying on. Is there a better way to look at this situation? Thoughts?

I have never had a problem finding sizes..i am a medium and most medium things fit me well. Women are more into fashion then men are, thats why they spend so much time.
The stores arent dummies, the inventory is what it is, because of demand.

The Female Form Returns to 1930s Fashion
In the 1930s there was a return to a more genteel, ladylike appearance. Budding rounded busts and waistline curves were seen and hair became softer and prettier as hair perms improved. Foreheads which had been hidden by cloche hats were revealed and adorned with small plate shaped hats. Clothes were feminine, sweet and tidy by day with a return to real glamour at night.
Daywear Versus Evening Glamour
Until the 1930s wealthy women had not really needed to wear practical day clothes. Although styles had been designated day styles if they were impractical it had not really mattered as long as maids took care of chores. Now women had more productive and busier lives and simpler pared down clothes gave a freedom of movement women relished in daily life. More luxurious gowns were kept for evening. New fabrics like metallic lame were very popular at night and were made to shimmer even more richly by adding plastic sequins and glass beads.
Madeleine Vionnet and the Cross Cut Bias Method
The French designer Madeleine Vionnet opened her own fashion house in 1912. She devised methods of bias cross cutting during the 1920s using a miniature model. She made popular the halter neck and the cowl neck.
The bias method has often been used to add a flirtatious and elegant quality to clothes. To make a piece of fabric hang and drape in sinuous folds and stretch over the round contours of the body, fabric pattern pieces can be cut not on the straight grain, but at an angle of 45 degrees.
It is sometimes said that Vionnet invented bias cutting, but historical evidence suggests that close fitting gowns and veils of the medieval period were made with cross cut fabrics. The Edwardians also made skirts that swayed to the back by joining a bias edge to a straight grain edge and the result was a pull to the back that formed the trained skirt. She did really popularise it and the resulting clothes are styles we forever associate with movie goddesses and dancers like Ginger Rogers.
Using her technique designers were able to produce magnificent gowns in satins, crepe-de-chines, silks, crepes and chiffons by cross cutting the fabric, creating a flare and fluidity of drapery that other methods could not achieve. Many of the gowns could be slipped over the head and came alive when put on the human form. Some evening garments made women look like Grecian goddesses whilst others made them look like half naked sexy vamps. Certain of her gowns still look quite contemporary.
There was a passion for sunbathing. Women tried to get tans and then show them off under full length backless evening dresses cut on the true cross or bias and which moulded to the body. To show off the styles a slim figure was essential and that was getting easier for women who were educated and aware as many now used contraception and did not have to bear baby after baby unless desired.
Men:
During the decade of the 1930’s saw dramatic changes in men’s fashion. It began with the great Wall Street Crash of October 24, 1929. By 1931, eight million people were out of work in the United States. Less or no work meant little or no money to spend on clothing. The garment industry witnessed shrinking budgets, and going-out-of-business sales were prevalent. The Edwardian tradition of successive clothing changes throughout the day finally died. Tailors responded to the change in consumer circumstances by offering more moderately priced styles.
During the early part of the decade, men’s suits were modified to create the image of a large torso. Shoulders were squared using wadding or shoulder pads and sleeves were tapered to the wrist. Peaked lapels framed the v-shaped chest and added additional breadth to the wide shoulders.
This period also say a rise in the popularity of the double-breasted suit, the precursor of the modern business suit. Masculine elegance demanded jackets with long, broad lapels, two, four, six or even eight buttons, square shoulders and ventless tails. Generous-cut, long trousers completed the look. These suits appeared in charcoal, steel or speckled gray, slate, navy and midnight blue.
Lovely dark fabrics were enhanced by herringbone and stippled vertical and diagonal stripes. In winter, brown cheviot was popular. In spring, accents of white, red or blue silk fibers were woven into soft wool. The striped suit became a standard element in a man’s wardrobe at this time. Single, double, chalk, wide and narrow stripes were all in demand.
1930s Glossary of Terms
- Cheviot: A British breed of sheep known for its heavy fleece. Cloth produced from this wool is a heavy twill weave.
- Gabardine: A firm, tightly woven fabric of worsted, cotton, wool or other fiber with a twill weave.
- Glen plaid: Vertical and horizontal stripes intersecting at regular intervals to form a houndstooth check.

Question by pht: Men’s Fall/Winter fashion 2009?
Does anyone know what’s in this year? It’s beginning to get extremely cold already here in Canada and I need to buy fall/winter clothes, and I’d like to find something trendy to incorporate into my style.
I know I’ll need a nice designer coat, since it’s what most people will see me in (and it will keep me warm!
). I was also wondering if beanies were still in this year too, like what this chick is wearing www. la2day. com/images/page_image/beanie.jpg (I’m not sure if Y!A hides links still, but just to be sure get rid of the spaces), I’m not sure what they called specifically lol. Shoes and hair are my own thing, so don’t really pick up on trends with those 2 things unless I REALLY like them lol.
I have such a hard time finding the latest fashion that I like on the internet, so I figured I’d ask you guys. And remember that I’m only 18, plus I’m gay (but what does that have to do with anything anyways lol). ![]()

Q&A: Men’s Fashion Help: The Color Black?

Question by alexevans145: Men’s Fashion Help: The Color Black?
I am a 19 year old male and I am very tall (6′6″) and have a stocky/athletic build and I am fairly muscular. I have a fashion question. I usually have the frat boy look on casual days at school but sometimes I really like to make flashy fashion statements when I go out on the town or go out with girls or to a nice restaurant etc. I feel like my go to casual out fit is a fairly simple solid black shirt (like a v-neck or polo t) some flashy designer jeans (True Religion, Rock and Republic, Seven’s,etc.), and then some black polo shoes that match my shirt or some black true religion shoes or some converses, etc. I feel like that the black in that outfit plays to my advantage in that it 1)slenderizes me 2)makes me appear taller 3) makes me appear tanner 4)makes my jeans stand out and makes that flashy “I have nice things” statement. I just feel like I wear that outfit a lot and I am looking for other ways to use black or dark clothing to play into the aforementioned benefits. Perhaps certain items such as different shoes or some very nice button-front shirts or particular sunglasses etc. Just looking for ideas to branch out with new clothes but at the same time wanting to keep wearing the dark/black clothing for the benefits it provides me. Thanks for your help guys

Question by waddyasay?: Is plaid hot in men’s fashion these days?
Plaid seems to be “in” but I’m not sure. I have seen plaid shoes (you know, like Scottish tartan, but not necessarily real Scottish style). What I want to know is what other men’s items are plaid these days? What stores have you seen plaid in? What designers? Is plaid really hot in men’s fashion?

No, plaid is not hot. I dont even care what brand it is. I am 23 and went to the bar this wekend and a friend of mine had on a plaid shirt and looked like a farmer… or hillbilly. Anyways when I made fun of him (come on it was PLAID, or course I did!) he said “What? This is Burberry!!” But I dont care, it was ugly.

I’m trying to do this look, wearing a long-sleeve or short-sleeve button-down shirts with nice designer jeans and shoes. I’m not sure what kind of shoes would work well with this, and I wonder if shoes other than dress shoes would work for this kind of outfit. I need pictures of this style to try to copy. Does anyone know of any places online I could look at pictures of this fashion style?
