Program Recycles Flip Flops to Build Community Playgrounds

A recycling company called TerraCycle is partnering with Old Navy and running a free flip-flop recycling campaign during April for Earth Day!  What a perfect opportunity to clean out your worn out flip-flop collection in time for new summer styles AND save the environment at the same time.

Starting April 22 (Earth Day) and running through May 21, 2011, Old Navy shoppers can deposit their used flip flops in colorful collection bins found inside any Old Navy store.  TerraCycle will then recycle the flip-flops into four playgrounds which will be donated to communities around the country.

By bringing in these hard-to-recycle products to any Old Navy store in across the U.S., consumers help keep waste out of their community landfills.  TerraCycle is an international upcycling and recycling company that encourages consumers to rethink waste and makes it easy to have a positive impact on the environment.

With the company’s motto, Buy a Shoe, Build a Community, BucketFeet aims to raise funds for children’s charities around the world while promoting new artists.

Bucketfeet_new shoe company_buy a shoe, build a community

New shoe company, BucketFeet, announced their official launch today in the Windy City.  The brands motto, Buy a Shoe, Build a Community, helps raise money for children’s charities while bringing awareness to new artists.  The brand launches with the simple vision to design and sell awesome one-of-a-kind shoes and help build communities.

BucketFeet exemplifies individuality and confidence while building communities that support the arts and help kids worldwide.  The company’s goal is to help consumers “get involved” in the community by contributing a portion of each sale to one of three innovative, children-focused, non-profit partners; MAGIC (world-class stringed instrument program for kids in the Woodlawn community in the South Side of Chicago), love.futbol (devotes financial resources to help build more safe soccer fields around the world) and Children Mending Hearts (provides resources to arts programs and workshops for homeless children).  Based out of Chicago, founders Aaron Firestein and Raaja Nemani have been building their dream one continent at a time.  Both avid travelers, the two met while volunteering with children in an impoverished area of Buenos Aires.  Since college, Aaron had been using shoes as an unconventional platform to show his art and Raaja became an instant fan and begged Aaron to make him a pair the minute he spotted them on his feet.

“As a creative person, it is amazing to see an artistic passion of mine become real. If you had told me five years ago that I would be launching a full-blown sneaker company, I wouldn’t have believed you.” – Aaron Firestein

“Selling awesome sneakers for a living is cool, but being able to use that to try to make a difference in the lives of kids around the world is a dream come true.” – Raaja Nemani

BucketFeet shoes will be sold direct to consumers through an online e-commerce storefront, thereby eliminating retailer markups.  The inaugural BucketFeet collection features original artistic designs from founder Aaron Firestein.

Soles4Souls Helps Provide Rescue & Relief to Middle Tennessee Storm Victims

Record weekend storms forced thousands of Middle Tennessee residents to take refuge in emergency shelters set up throughout the area. Nearly 20 inches of rain in a two day period has caused deadly flooding, taking lives, closing over 150 streets and highways, and forcing thousands of residents to flee their homes by cars if possible, but often by rescue boats.

Soles4Souls, with its international headquarters in Nashville, has committed to provide at least 20,000 pairs of shoes and workboots to their neighbors who have fled their homes, in many cases with only the “clothes on their back.” These shoes will provide warmth, protection, and a sense of normalcy in a world that has turned upside down.

Your emergency help today will help us deliver shoes tomorrow to our neighbors in Middle Tennessee. It will also help us provide workboots to the volunteers and professionals conducting rescue operations to those who are stranded. $1 will help provide one set of footwear. $20 will help 20 people in need. $50 will help 50 men, women, and children in Middle Tennessee. Please help.

Girl-SoliderThe Cause

Girl Soldier is a New York based not-for-profit organization with a global perspective, focused on helping to secure basic human rights for girls around the world.

The Event

On February 17, 2010, the first annual Girl Soldier charity event will take place at Studio 385 in Tribeca. The event will raise funding and awareness to aid and benefit young girls and women in war-ravaged Third and Second World countries. It is the hope of Girl Soldier’s sponsors and planners that it will encourage and nurture concern for girls and women without a public voice. By coming together, we can help these girls progress to a safer and more promising future.

The Organization

Girl Soldier is a registered 501c3 (pending) not-for-profit organization that aims to empower charities for women in war-ravaged communities through special projects, counseling and mentorship. Girl Soldier delivers funds to carefully vetted not-for-profit orgvanizations on the ground within these communities.

Sister Caroline & The Film

The event is scheduled to coincide with the filming and release of Girl Soldier (Caspian Pictures) the film, the story of the kidnapping of 139 girls from the St. Mary’s Boarding School in Uganda. The story revolves around the character of Sister Caroline, a nun, and her courageous attempt to free the girls. The film will star
Uma Thurman as Sister Caroline. Prior to the film, a documentary will be released detailing Sister Caroline’s  experiences starting on the night of the kidnapping of the girls and focusing on her campaign to rally the world’s attention. The documentary will also highlight the cause: the horrible prevalence of girls throughout the world having their basic human rights revoked.

How You Can Help

Their organization distributes these shoes, free of charge, to people around the world. Since 2005, Soles4Souls has given away more than 7 million pairs of new and gently worn shoes (currently distributing one pair every 9 seconds). The shoes have been distributed in 125 countries, including Haiti, Kenya, Nepal and the United States. In fact, in the time it takes you to read this post, they will have distributed another 6+ pair.

Jimmy Choo and the Elton John AIDS Foundation have launched the Project PEP collection to support the Simelela Rape Centre.

Help raise awareness for this worthy cause by entering our photo competition. Upload a photo based on the theme ‘You, Your Shoes and 72′. You could win exclusive prizes and have your work exhibited at the Project PEP launch event at Selfridges London at the end of October.

choo-Cruise_2010_Hi_Res_2

Why is 72 the key number for this project?

Jimmy Choo announces the launch of Project PEP with the Elton John AIDS Foundation. This project is designed to support the funding of the Simelela centre in South Africa. The vibrant capsule collection features a distinctive and collectible punk rock motif print representing Jimmy Choo’s passionate and individualist spirit.

This cause has particular resonance for Jimmy Choo because of its support and empowerment of women. In 2005 Jimmy Choo Founder and President Tamara Mellon worked with the Elton John AIDS Foundation on a charity auction project ‘Four Inches’ that assisted with the first funding of the Simelela centre.

We are women helping women and we are proud to continue our collaboration with the compelling and urgent initiatives of the Elton John AIDS Foundation and to provide a voice for under-privileged women in South Africa. We are excited to launch this social media campaign which we believe is a fun, light-hearted way to make people aware of a very serious subject.” – Tamara Mellon, Founder & President, Jimmy Choo.

Jimmy Choo will donate 25% of the net sales from Project PEP to the Elton John AIDS Foundation.  With this funding, the Elton John AIDS Foundation can directly support the pioneering Simelela Rape Centre in Cape Town that was set up in 2005, with the mission to administer victims of abuse with the vital HIV preventative PEP medication (Post Exposure Prophylaxis) and provide the infrastructure for medical, counselling and legal support.

The proceeds raised by Project PEP will enable the clinic to stay open day and night providing 24 hour/7 days a week access to the vital life saving treatment that has to be administered within the first 72 hours of exposure to HIV.

The slogan for the campaign is ‘You, Your Shoes and 72′ and many of the winning images will be showcased at the global launch of Project PEP at Selfridges London on 29th October and at Jimmy Choo Project PEP events globally. Over 100 winners will be chosen to win products from the Project PEP range, with a Grand Prize offering the overall winner 7 pairs of shoes and 2 bags from Jimmy Choo.
